It’s that time of year again, cold and flu season. It seems like no matter what we try to do it spreads around us. An occasional day off to binge watch your favorite shows is great except with a stuffy nose, painful cough, and fever threw in. Here are some tips that’ll be extremely helpful in preventing getting sick this year.

Get a flu shot

Each year some variation of three basic types of influenza will be the one to cause trouble. The flu vaccine is modified each year to protect us from the one strain experts believe will be the most widespread. Although getting the flu shot may bring some discomfort or minor flu symptoms, it goes a long way to protect from the full-blown thing!

Wash your hands…often

Stay Healthy GraphicWashing your hands will help keep those pesky germs away. Use soap and scrub for at least 20 seconds. Imagine you are a surgeon going into surgery. I always tend to focus attention on the tops and under fingernails, the germs like to hide there. Wash multiple times a day, and don’t forget to have some lotion around so your hands don’t dry out.

Exercise

Another great reason for us to exercise. Regular exercise keeps our bodies operating in peak condition, especially our immune systems. If you are sick though, make sure to get enough rest before you start pumping the iron again. Making a habit out of exercise will help prevent and even shorten the duration of sickness.

Did we mention washing your hands?

It’s that important! This is your first, last and best method of keeping away from germs especially if you work in a large office or use public transportation. Make sure you are also cleaning things you regularly touch with your hands like your phone, purse or wallet. Keep some hand sanitizer with you everywhere you go, it can’t hurt to be a little careful.

Keep your home clean

During the cold season, we spend a lot of our time indoors, especially in our homes. Germs like to hide on all types of surfaces like countertops, desks, doorknobs, and even the floor. Make a habit of cleaning high touch points daily, and clean your floors weekly. Carpets are another place that dirt and dust are gathered. Consider a professional carpet cleaning service like Precision Chem-Dry before and after cold and flu season. Chem-Dry’s Hot Carbonating Extraction process has been proven to remove 89% of airborne bacteria and will remove those hidden germs, dirt and allergens in your carpets.

We hope this tips will help keep you and your family safe and healthy this cold & flu season!
